PHOTOGRAPHY
A fashion-inspired portrait photography project exploring gender expression through contrasting harsh and soft lighting, using styling, colour and posing to challenge conventional representations of identity.
THE CONCEPT
This fashion-inspired portrait photography project explores the relationship between lighting, identity and gender expression. Challenging traditional gendered representations often found in fashion photography, the project aims to present a more fluid and expressive interpretation of identity through styling, posing and visual atmosphere. By pairing two contrasting portraits, a soft-lit image featuring an oversized suit and a harsh-lit image incorporating bold accessories and dramatic colour. The work investigates how visual conventions can shape perceptions of masculinity, femininity and self-expression. The resulting images celebrate individuality while encouraging viewers to question familiar stereotypes within fashion imagery.
THE IMPLEMENTATION
The project was realised through two studio photoshoots that utilised contrasting lighting techniques to create distinct visual moods. The soft-light portrait employed two softboxes to produce even, diffused illumination, resulting in a natural and understated aesthetic that complemented the oversized suit styling. In contrast, the harsh-light portrait used a focused key light with a blue gel to create strong shadows and cool tones, paired with a softbox fitted with a red gel to introduce warmth and visual contrast. Styling, accessories and posing were carefully considered to reinforce themes of gender fluidity and self-expression, while post-production techniques refined colour, tone and background elements. The project also provided valuable experience in photo retouching and mobile editing workflows, contributing to the final polished outcomes.
