Annual Report

PUBLICATION DESIGN

An annual report publication design for the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria's inspired by the theme of 'wonder'

THE CONCEPT

The concept 'Discover the Wonder' explores the journey from curiosity and questioning to discovery, awe and amazement within Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (RBGV). Inspired by the Gardens’ vision of “a world that values the beauty, wonder, and importance of nature,” the concept reinterprets wonder as more than an appreciation of the natural world. It can emerge through moments of stillness, unexpected discoveries and meaningful connections with the surrounding environment. Drawing on the experiences and emotions associated with the Gardens, the publication aims to capture these subtle moments through expressive typography, organic forms and layered textures. By progressively introducing colour and visual details throughout the publication, the design reflects the unfolding journey of wonder, encouraging audiences to look beyond the information presented and discover the beauty and significance within the everyday.

THE IMPLEMENTATION

The annual report was realised through a cohesive visual system combining expressive typography, hand-created watercolour imagery and restrained gold accents. Museo was selected for body copy and supporting information, while the cursive typeface The Imaginations introduces personality through section headings and oversized background typography. A refined palette of blue and purple, complemented by gold line work, creates visual consistency across the publication. The cover features a more intense watercolour composition, representing wonder in its fullest form and establishing the visual direction for the publication. I developed the infographics using a combination of white vector illustrations, subtle watercolour shapes and gold linework to integrate data within the broader design language.
